LUST (Leaking Storage Tanks)

State and tribal records of confirmed releases from regulated storage tank systems, the single most common cleanup-site type in most radius reports. State program names vary (LUST, LPST, LST), but the substance is the same: a reported release, an assigned case, and a case status.

ASTM E1527-21 requires a 0.5 mile search for leaking storage tank records.

The case status carries the analysis. An open LUST case at or adjoining the subject property is a documented, unresolved release. A closed case merits reading the closure basis. Closed after excavation to cleanup criteria is one thing. Closed under a risk-based standard with contamination left in place, and perhaps a groundwater restriction, is a controls question. Direction and distance matter for off-site cases. Petroleum plumes are typically shorter than solvent plumes, and an up-gradient open case within a few hundred feet is the textbook off-site concern.

Gas stations recycle addresses and corner lots, so confirm the geocoding. A hit at 0.01 miles is sometimes the subject property itself under a former operator's name.
