Registered Storage Tanks (UST/AST)

State and tribal registries of storage tank systems, underground (UST) and, in some states, aboveground (AST). Registration records typically show tank count, capacity, contents, installation dates, construction, and status (in use, temporarily out of use, removed, closed in place).

The ASTM E1527-21 search scope is subject property and adjoining properties only. A registration is evidence of presence, not release. Releases live in the LUST database.

The registration history is often the most useful part. Tanks removed in 1992, closed in place in 1988, or registered and then vanished all point at what may still be in the ground and what closure documentation should exist. Federal UST regulation exempts categories that still matter physically, most notably heating oil tanks serving the premises, so absence from the registry does not mean absence of a tank. Fill ports, vent pipes, and pavement patches spotted during reconnaissance regularly find what the registry does not show.
